ALANYA

Alanya is located on a small peninsula, surrounded by the Toros Mountains to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The climate is typical Mediterranean, it is hot and arid in summer, rainy and humid in winter. There are many castles and churches in Alanya, and the surrounding areas date back to the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Representatives of different cultures and civilizations live here, 85 sites have beaches marked with a blue flag. In Alanya, which is one of the rare places in the world with its 72-kilometer coastline, you can practice any kind of sports.

Alanya Castle
Surrounded by 6 km long walls and located on a 10-hectare peninsula, Alanya Castle was the seat of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations. Alanya, in the first half of the 14th century, remained one of the important cities of Anatolia and the Mediterranean due to its important naval base, as the leading trading city of the Anatolian Seljuks and as a center of trade and shipbuilding due to strong relations with Egypt and Syria. Mostly Egyptian merchants who came for the famous cedars used in the construction of ships, as well as Genoese, Venetian and Florentine merchants bought spices, canvas and sugar. In his book “The Practice of Trade”, Pegolotti presented a table of weights and measurements used in Alanya for comparison with the Italian one. Egyptian and Syrian merchants were heading to the ports of the Black Sea via Alanya.

The Red Tower
It is one of the unique examples of a medieval Mediterranean defensive structure of the 13th century. The Red Tower was built by order of Alaeddin Keykubad I, ruler of the Seljuks, for Ebu Ali Reh el Kettani, who was a master builder from Aleppo, in order to protect the harbor, shipyard and Alanya castle from attacks from the sea. The Red Tower has attracted attention both today and in the past with its monumental appearance and has become the subject of many books. Evlia Celebi, a 17th-century traveler, stated: “From the sea side, Alanya Castle has a solid octagonal tower, this tower can accommodate two thousand (2000) people during the siege, and the second caretaker, who lives here, has forty (40) soldiers.”

Damlatash Cave
Damlatash cave was discovered in 1948, when it was opened for stone mining during the construction of the port. The cave is located on the west coast of the historic Alanya Castle. The name “Damlatash" comes from a stalactite that exists due to drops of water. Apart from its beauty, this cave is popular because of its atmosphere, which helps people with asthma. Those people who come here under the supervision of a doctor stay in the cave for 21 days as treatment. The weather in the cave does not change during the seasons, the temperature is 22 °C, humidity is 95%, constant pressure is 760 mm. The atmosphere of the cave contains 71% nitrogen, 20.5% oxygen, 2.5/10,000 (from two and a half to ten thousand) CO2 and some radioactive ions.
