X-WATERS Kaliningrad 2021

Sandy dunes, dancing forest and unpredictable Baltic

19 September
2021

Curonian Spit,
Kaliningrad region

DISTANCES
1 km, 3 km, 5 km

What's the challenge?

Curonian Spit is an endless and very picturesque sandy beach, included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. Swimming here is a real adventure:
• The distance goes along the spit, which means that it will be convenient for you to control the progress and at the same time enjoy the views: white sandy dunes, forests and, of course, spectators - because they will be able to observe you throughout the whole swim!
• The Baltic Sea is wayward and sometimes capricious, a wave pressing you to the shore can appear any time, and the strength of the wind will not be known until the day of the swim (we even have a Plan B in case the weather does not let us go into the water where we plan to)
• The water is cool and not too salty, it's definitely not a simple swim!

The swim is part of X-WATERS's unique project "Embrace Russia", which you can also join.

All distances start from different points. Finish in one place.
The distances run along the Curonian Spit towards the Zelenogradsk city.

In case of bad weather, we have provided a backup plan for the swim in the Curonian Lagoon, not far from the Zelenogradsk city.

CURONIAN SPIT

Curonian Spit is a creation of wind and waves of the Baltic Sea formed 5,000 years ago, Russia's oldest national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Six ecological trails call visitors on a journey through unique places: "dancing" forest, Rossitten Bird Observatory, Epha dune, Royal forest, etc.

The longest (98 km!) sandy barrier spit on the planet stretches from Russian Zelenogradsk to Lithuanian Klaipeda. And since you find yourself in Zelenogradsk, it is worth a walk around. The city, which in 1844 received the status of a royal resort, is known for a picturesque seafront promenade, architecture of "German times", a 150-meter pier and a huge park. Here literally everything is created for leisurely walks along the seashore, rest and inspiration!
